Cody Rhodes wants to write about his own version of events.
As a 19-year veteran of the pro wrestling business, Cody Rhodes is no stranger to hearing rumors about himself and others. One of the ongoing ones centers on a line from the memoir of The Young Bucks, titled Killing The Business: From Backyards To The Big Leagues. In it, The Young Bucks chronicled the establishment of All Elite Wrestling, and in doing so, noted that Rhodes was the last member The Elite to sign his deal with the upstart promotion.
While speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About, Rhodes addressed the line and his desire to dismiss it for good.
“So you’re talking about dispelling a rumor. And I feel like what I’ve [seen] is when you’re not able to speak on something and then it goes out there. One thing that I do agree, social can be very scary when they take it as fact. There’s a line about me in a book about how I was last to sign when me and the boys started the alternative promotion. That line is taken as if it is a biblical verse, and it is something that’s used anytime you have to build a case. And so badly, I’ve always felt like, well, I’m going to have to write my book, my version. I’m going to have to dispel.”
Rhodes Further Explains His Frustrations
Last year, Rhodes confirmed that he was indeed the final Elite member to officially put pen to paper on his initial AEW contract. However, he asserts that that does not mean his investment in the company was any less than his fellow founding figures.
“I hated that in The Young Bucks’ book they said I was last to the signing, because that’s a big thing,” Rhodes told Chris Van Vliet. “Some of the AEW defenders who don’t realize they’re turning people off to their product more than they’re turning people on. That’s one of the things that people always cite, Oh, he was last, he wasn’t that big a deal to the origin. No. This guy here who’s off camera was the first person to ever meet Tony and he met him in a vetting process for all of us. So yes, I guess I was the last and yes, I had different thoughts and it’s not incorrect at all what they said. Yeah, it’s not incorrect but I was just in on it as well as anybody else.”
Rhodes spent three years in AEW as an on-screen talent and Executive Vice President. In 2022, he returned to WWE, where he now reigns as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
