WWE referee Charles Robinson has taken some pretty nasty-looking bumps. As it turns out, he recently admitted to making up one of the most vicious ones.
Robinson spoke with Chris Van Vliet on his Insight podcast. During the conversation, Robinson was asked about Goldberg spearing him during his retirement match this summer. At the time, Robinson claimed that Goldberg cracked one of his ribs.
Now, he tells Van Vliet that he made the story up.
“I mean, normally he picks you up, lays you down, nice and soft. He went right through me. [Van Vliet said, ‘and he cracked your rib?’] Well, no, my girlfriend and I were in the movie. I said, ‘What can I do to put this over to make Goldberg feel good?’ I said, Hmm, there’s an image of a broken rib online, so I just posted that.”
Goldberg even apologized publicly for hurting Robinson. As it turns out, Robinson told Goldberg about his fake story, too.
“I called him to tell him what I was doing. He goes, ‘That’s a great idea.’ So he didn’t mind. I was sore, seriously, for about 10 days, coughing and stuff. They can’t do anything about a rib anyway, so why go get it checked?”
Robinson reveals the worst bump he’s actually taken
Despite feeling sore from the spear by Goldberg, Robinson said that wasn’t even the worst bump he’s taken. That honor goes to the late Randy Savage, who hit him so hard with an elbow drop that it put him in the hospital for 12 days.
“Randy Savage elbow. But it wasn’t a ref bump. I was a worker then, but that was the worst bump I’ve taken, the elbow from Randy Savage. He put me in the hospital for 12 days,” Robinson explained. “It was Ric [Flair] and I against Medusa and Savage, and he came off the top with the elbow and Ric Flair wasn’t going to take the elbow from Savage, so they let Little Naitch. Cracked my sternum, collapsed my lung.”
Two hours after the move, Robinson said he still couldn’t breathe. He called Jimmy Hart and went to the hospital, which resulted in a 12-day hospital stay. He says Savage called to check on him every day, and praised Savage as a nice guy who was very clear about what he wanted from his in-ring work.
