Triple H is very well known for using a sledgehammer as part of his in-ring presentation. The weapon was usually brought out when he needed an equalizer, but it was normally used in a safe manner. As Triple H recently recalled, he actually legitimately injured an opponent once because the prop hammer he was using during a match broke.
Triple H was featured on Complex’s On Display with Joe Lo Puma. “The Game” gave Lo Puma a tour of WWE Headquarters and spoke about his history with the sledgehammer, one of which he had on display in his office.
“To be honest, I just used whatever hammer was available. I used it one time because I needed to — I ended up smashing a coffin with it that The Rock in, and it just became synonymous with me after that.”
Triple H said he did not like using props, preferring the real thing. There was one case where he had to use a prop, explaining the difficulties of using the heavy weapon during a match at WrestleMania 17 with The Undertaker.
Triple H actually injured The Undertaker with a prop hammer
Triple H said that when he struck The Undertaker in the head, he tried to protect his opponent. However, the hammer handle tore through the prop head and cut Taker’s forehead wide open.
“Over the years, I’ve used various ones,” he continued. “I did not like using—every now and then they’d have a prop one or something [rigged up]. Ironically, the only time I ever injured anyone with the hammer was with Taker. We were going to, I believe it was WrestleMania, he was going to put me up for the Last Ride. I was going to grab the hammer on the way up, but we were so afraid about could I get all the way up there and still use it [because of the weight.]
“So we used a gimmicked sledgehammer that had a foam head because it was much lighter. I went up top and hit him in the head with it. I held onto the foam part to protect him. The handle went all the way through the foam part and cut him [motions across most of his forehead]. When I hit him, I had no idea. He went down and when he came up, he’s bleeding, I’m like, ‘Holy shit, what happened?’ He was just covered in blood.”
