AEW Top Star Signs Dual Contract With Another Promotion

An AEW mainstay has officially expanded his in-ring footprint, with a new agreement confirmed on March 18, 2026 — but the full scope of the deal reveals more than just a routine signing.

The announcement came from Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) (via X), confirming that Claudio Castagnoli is now working under a dual contract.

The move allows him to compete across both AEW and CMLL, signaling a deeper collaboration between the promotions and placing Castagnoli in a unique position on the global stage.

Claudio Castagnoli’s dual contract with CMLL and AEW marks a historic first

CMLL stated that Castagnoli’s agreement falls under a “dual contract modality,” enabling him to appear regularly in both companies.

The reigning CMLL World Heavyweight Champion now joins a growing list of talent — including Místico, Máscara Dorada, Hechicero, and Persephone — who are working across promotions.

However, Castagnoli stands apart. He is the first wrestler already contracted to AEW to formally sign an additional deal with CMLL. This makes it less of a standard tag-in and more of a true crossover moment. In wrestling terms, he’s not switching brands — he’s working both sides of the ring.

Castagnoli captured the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship in November 2025 by ending Gran Guerrero’s three-year reign. Since then, he has remained active in Arena México. He has successfully defended the title against names like Último Guerrero, Xelhua, Akuma, and Euforia. His next defense is scheduled for March 20 against Hechicero.

CMLL noted that the agreement strengthens ties with AEW and creates new opportunities for talent exchange. The partnership continues to build momentum, with NJPW also part of the broader collaboration.

Despite the added commitment, Castagnoli’s AEW status remains unchanged. He continues to be a key figure on the roster, proving he can juggle two promotions without dropping the ball — or the title.

With one foot in AEW and the other in CMLL, Castagnoli isn’t just crossing borders — he’s setting the pace for what modern wrestling partnerships can look like.
