Matt Cardona reveals a conversation with a top WWE executive that led to his return to the promotion.
Speaking to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes on his What Do You Wanna Talk About podcast, Matt Cardona revealed who was responsible for his return to the promotion in January 2026. He revealed that his wife, Chelsea Green, spoke to WWE President Nick Khan about him after he returned to NXT as part of the TNA invasion angle.
Nick Khan then asked Chelsea Green to give Matt Cardona his number, which eventually led to the former United States Champion’s return to WWE earlier this year.
“Man, we’re peeling back the curtain here? I’ll do the condensed version. So, I’m working for TNA, but not technically under contract, and TNA does the invasion of NXT, and they asked to have me,” Matt Cardona said. “I know I’m not under contract, but I’m not gonna sneak in. Do that, and it leads to a match.
“Chelsea was doing, I guess, media for Rumble in Saudi, and Nick Khan was there. She said to Nick something like, ‘You see my husband wrestle NXT?’ Nick said something like, ‘I’ve always wanted to meet your husband, give him my number.’ She gave me Nick Khan’s number,” Matt Cardona said. You know, I’m texting immediately. And then Nick called me right there, said, ‘What do you want?’ I said, ‘I want to come back,’ and the ball got rolling from there.
Following his return, Cardona became part of the SmackDown roster and was recently attacked by Randy Orton after he confronted the Viper over his heel turn against Cody Rhodes.
