Cody Rhodes opens up about one of the downsides of his AEW departure.
Four years removed from it, Cody and Brandi Rhodes‘ departure from All Elite Wrestling remains a popular topic of discussion, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding it. According to the Cody, he left AEW due to a “personal issue”. With that being a vague statement, though, many fans have formed their own theories about its possible meaning.
While appearing on The Breakfast Club, Cody doubled down on his decision to keep the reasoning behind his exit close to the vest. At the same time, he recognizes that meant he and Brandi would have navigate the often wrong speculation attached to it.
“Our departure from when we left the company we were with and helped create, that was AEW, it came down to her deciding to not talk about that departure. We’re not gonna talk about it. We’re moving on. Did bad stuff happen? Good stuff happened, too. I’m not gonna talk about it. And one of the sad things about not talking about why we left and the departure, one of the difficult things was narratives get created,” Cody said.
“Stories get told, podcasts happen, fans literally think they know what happened when no one’s been even close. What I would say is the selfless part, she lives with that. She owns that. She respects not just here, but the place we left enough to [say] ‘I’m not gonna talk about that.’ That made it so that they’re good, they’re out of here. That was very, very helpful for us. Again, good stuff happened there, too. But that’s what I mean by selfless because she lives with that.”
‘It’s Not All Fans’
Despite the frustrations with the false narratives being attributed to their AEW exit, Cody has reminded Brandi that not all fans are involved in it. WWE WrestleMania 40, in which Brandi unaccompanied Cody to his main event title match, served as proof of that.
“I said, ‘You’re gonna come out with me at WrestleMania 40,'” Cody recalled. “I was so happy because the fans reacted. Big pop, big excitement. I just needed to kind of nudge her like, see? They’re the real ones. They get it. They ain’t mad at you. That was very important that she felt it because a lot of wrestlers take a step off, they go away or they do something or they screw up, make a mistake, whatever, and then they come back and the fans, they always cradle you back in. They’re really special.”
