WWE Tightens Rules on Ring Gear Approval — REPORT

A new backstage report has shed light on WWE’s approach to ring attire. The company reportedly implemented stricter approval procedures for gear used by its talent.

The update emerged during a recent Fightful Select Answers Q&A. Questions about WWE’s long-standing equipment and attire checks led to new details about how performers can present themselves on television and at live events.

While the full scope of the policy remains unclear, it appears the company is taking a closer look at what makes it to the ring.

WWE reportedly requires advance approval for ring gear

The discussion began when a fan asked about WWE’s restrictions on ring gear. The question referenced how referees have traditionally checked gloves, wrist tape, and boots for hidden objects or potential weapons before matches.

The fan also pointed to past examples. These included Rhea Ripley’s chain-wrapped boots and ring gear worn by Jade Cargill that appears to incorporate metal chains, questioning how those designs fit within existing regulations.

Responding to the question, Sean Ross Sapp stated that WWE does have official restrictions regarding ring attire. He further noted that the company recently introduced a requirement that gear must be approved before it can be used.

According to the report, wrestlers have to submit designs and accessories for review ahead of appearances. The exact details of the approval process remain unknown, and it is not currently clear whether certain talent receive exceptions.

The reported guidelines are also said to reinforce restrictions involving third-party intellectual property. These help WWE avoid potential copyright issues. In addition, the review process is believed to address safety concerns, broadcast standards, sponsorship obligations, and overall brand consistency.

Like a referee checking for foreign objects before the opening bell, WWE appears to be taking a closer look at what enters the ring before it ever reaches the spotlight.

For now, the reported policy signals a more structured approach to ring gear approval as WWE continues to refine presentation standards across its programming.
