Former WWE Champion Paul Wight recently reflected on his career, and his comments about championships surprised many fans. Despite winning multiple world titles, he does not see himself as someone who needed them.
Wight had a long and successful run in wrestling. He built his name as a dominant giant in the ring. Over the years, he won several major championships. He became a seven-time world champion across different promotions. That includes titles in WCW, WWE, and ECW. On paper, that is a huge achievement. But he sees it differently.
Even with all those title wins, Wight believes his role was something else. He did not see himself as the top champion. Instead, he viewed himself as a key part of someone else’s journey.
Paul Wight explains why he didn’t need to be WWE Champion
Speaking on Insights with Chris Van Vliet, Wight shared his thoughts openly. He also recalled advice from Arn Anderson, who said he shot himself in the foot by becoming a good wrestler.
“Arn Anderson told me, ‘The dumbest thing you ever did is learn how to work.’ So any minute, I was able to be a good opponent for what we were doing.”
Wight then shared his perspective on championships, explaining that giants serve a different purpose in wrestling storylines.
“I knew that me, personally, I don’t think I should ever have been champion. You don’t need a giant to be a champion. You need a giant to be an obstacle for the upcoming champion. You need somebody, something, a wall, a mountain, something that has to be overcome so that the next talent can be on its way.”
