Finn Bálor Confirms WWE Had Big Plans for The Demon vs. The Fiend

WWE‘s Finn Bálor has revealed that a Demon vs. The Fiend match was in the works.

The inaugural WWE Universal Champion Finn Bálor was the latest guest on the INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet podcast. During the conversation, he was asked whether there were any plans for him in his Demon King gimmick to face the late Bray Wyatt as The Fiend. Wyatt debuted the character in 2019 against Bálor, who was in his regular persona, and defeated him at that year’s SummerSlam.

In the interview, Finn Bálor confirmed that the match was in the works, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.

“Yeah, I think that was certainly in the works, and something that I always think about and look back on and say ‘I’ve been very lucky to have had almost every match that I’ve ever wanted to have.’ But that’s one that I didn’t get to have, and we almost got Sister Abigail versus the demon, and Windham had gotten sick a couple of days before we had to switch that match out at short notice,” Bálor said.

Finn Bálor first faced Bray Wyatt (in his cult leader persona) at SummerSlam 2017. He was later scheduled to compete as the Demon King against Wyatt at TLC 2017, with Wyatt set to debut his new “Sister Abigail” character. However, Wyatt was not medically cleared to wrestle and was replaced by AJ Styles.

Finn Bálor comments on facing AJ Styles

Despite not getting to face Bray Wyatt as the Demon King, Finn Bálor got a massive first-time singles match against AJ Styles at TLC 2017. Commenting on the contest, Bálor expressed gratitude for sharing the ring with someone he looked up to his entire career.

“Yeah, and I think that was like our first match ever. AJ is someone who I’ve looked up to my whole career, someone who I’ve admired. You can kind of look up to people, but not really relate to them, like, you know, I’ve always looked up to John Cena as the pinnacle of being like a WWE superstar, but I don’t really relate to him, in the sense of our journeys have been slightly different, the way we work is different. But AJ, I feel like we’re very, very similar. I was just like a couple years behind them, so someone who I’ve always, like, admired and aspired to be like. So getting to go in the ring with AJ that night was absolutely amazing,” Bálor said.
