WWE revisited one of the most influential factions in modern wrestling during the July 13 episode of RAW. Moreover, one detail immediately caught fans’ attention.
A retrospective video package on The Shield prominently featured Dean Ambrose without blurring or editing his appearance, sparking plenty of conversation.
While the footage quickly fueled speculation online, the bigger picture tells a different story.
WWE acknowledges The Shield’s history with unedited Dean Ambrose footage
The video package aired after the opening segment featuring Oba Femi and before IYO SKY’s entrance for the night’s first match. Narrated by Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, the video celebrated The Shield’s legacy. It also included several clips of Dean Ambrose alongside his former stablemates.
Unlike previous years, Ambrose’s face was shown in full, with no edits or blurring. The presentation reflects WWE’s current approach under Paul “Triple H” Levesque, who has embraced the company’s history rather than removing former stars from archival footage.
Under the current creative regime, WWE has increasingly referenced past performers through projects like the WWE Vault initiative and historical video packages. Showing the original Shield footage preserves those moments instead of rewriting them, even when the featured talent now competes elsewhere.
That said, the footage should not be viewed as an indication that Jon Moxley — formerly known as Dean Ambrose — is headed back to WWE. While Triple H has previously said the door remains open for former talent, Moxley has an AEW contract that runs through 2027.
In addition to remaining an active in-ring competitor, Moxley’s current agreement reportedly includes backstage coaching and mentoring responsibilities. He is also a central figure in AEW programming. Currently, he leads the Death Riders faction while continuing to compete at the top of the card.
Sometimes history deserves a clean replay rather than a dusty finish. For WWE, airing unblurred Shield footage appears to be about honoring one of its defining factions, not teasing an imminent reunion.
