Why AEW Had Kenny Omega Beat MJF on Dynamite Instead of Redemption PPV — Report

Details have emerged about Kenny Omega defeating MJF to become the AEW World Champion on Dynamite, rather than at the Redemption pay-per-view.

AEW fans believed Kenny Omega would face MJF for the World Championship in the main event of the inaugural Redemption PPV. The event will take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on July 26. However, the match took place on the July 8 episode of Dynamite, where Omega became the new champion.

Responding to a fan’s question about this on a recent Fightful Select Answers Q&A session, Sean Ross Sapp revealed that MJF pushed to move the match up to Dynamite. He noted that AEW had planned for Omega to become the new champion for at least five months. In fact, the promotion had mapped out the MJF vs. Darby Allin and the MJF vs. Omega path for at least that long as well.

Sapp further noted that AEW is keen on putting on huge matches like his on television because the company makes most of its money through its TV deal at this point. He also believes a totally different match is happening at Redemption and that the promotion wanted to move more tickets for All In next month.

Kenny Omega will have his AEW World Championship celebration on tonight’s episode of Dynamite at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts. It will be interesting to see who will step up to the new champion to book a match at the Redemption PPV.
