El Hijo Del Vikingo Facing Lengthy Absence After ACL Surgery — Report

El Hijo del Vikingo’s successful knee surgery has answered one question. Now another question looms over WWE and AAA fans. When will one of lucha libre’s biggest stars return to the ring?

A new report has shed light on the expected recovery timeline. Unfortunately, it appears the wait could be a long one.

The injury has already forced major changes to AAA and WWE plans, with Vikingo sidelined before a scheduled title defense on NXT.

El Hijo del Vikingo expected to miss around nine months after ACL surgery

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio and the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vikingo underwent surgery for a torn ACL on July 7. He is expected to be out of action for approximately nine months.

Meltzer reported, “Right now the expectation of El Hijo del Vikingo, who underwent surgery for a torn ACL on 7/7, is that he will be out of action for about nine months. Vikingo was Latin American champion and with the injury, the title is vacant.”

If that timetable holds, Vikingo could return around April 2027.

The injury occurred at the end of June while Vikingo was preparing to defend the AAA Latin American Championship against E.K. Prosper on WWE NXT. He reportedly suffered the knee injury just hours before the match, forcing WWE to change its plans.

Before his injury, Vikingo had remained a major presence across both promotions. He competed on WWE SmackDown in June, where he lost to Rey Fenix, while also feuding with El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Mini Vikingo in AAA.

Unfortunately, knee problems have become an unwelcome tag partner throughout his career, and this latest setback continues that trend.

His injury also left the AAA Latin American Championship vacant. During last weekend’s AAA television episode, Dorian Roldan attempted to award the title to Omos. However, AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio stepped in to stop the move.

The lengthy recovery is also expected to keep Vikingo out of Triplemanía in September. He will also miss out on WWE and AAA’s upcoming Worlds Collide event in Chicago later that month.

For now, the focus shifts from championship gold to rehabilitation. While Vikingo’s high-flying offense is grounded for the moment, the latest report indicates the goal remains a full return once his recovery is complete.
