A memorable Madison Square Garden moment from WWE’s Attitude Era has resurfaced after Gangrel shared a behind-the-scenes story involving Vince McMahon and future U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the WWE veteran, what looked like an accident was actually a carefully planned backstage prank — though Gangrel didn’t realize it until afterward.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the former Brood leader recalled being unexpectedly added to a house show against Kane in the late 1990s, unaware that McMahon had allegedly orchestrated much more than just the match.
Gangrel says Vince McMahon planned the Donald Trump blood prank
Gangrel explained that neither he nor Kane had originally been scheduled for the Madison Square Garden event before being added at the last minute.
“This is a house show… Out of nowhere they said, ‘Hey, you’ve been added onto the Garden.'”
During his entrance, Gangrel noticed the crowd reacting louder than usual. Thinking fans were simply enjoying the performance, he leaned into his signature entrance even more.
“I chug down extra zesty mint… When I go to spray it… I let it out up, and I let it out long.”
Only later did he discover why the audience had been so animated. According to Gangrel, Donald Trump was seated in the front row with his girlfriend, and fans were trying to warn him to move. Instead, Trump leaned closer to the barricade, unknowingly placing himself directly in the “spray zone.”
Gangrel said Stephanie McMahon later told him Vince McMahon was upset and wanted to see him the following day. Believing he might be in serious trouble, he was relieved when the meeting took an unexpected turn.
“I walk in, and he goes, ‘Wasn’t that great?'”
Gangrel claimed McMahon admitted it had all been planned.
“He knew that he was coming… booked me on the show… knew I’m gonna spray that blood… It was a double rib on me.”
He added that Trump’s companion’s clothing had even been accounted for, saying WWE had a replacement ready. Looking back on the bizarre incident, Gangrel summed it up with one final line: “So, I can say I spit on a future president.”
