Every Halloween, we return to the same question that haunts streaming services everywhere: do we want jump scares, a cult classic, or the comfort of a Disney original?
For independent wrestlers Londyn Dior and Lili Ruiz, the answer differs. Dior, known as “The Diamond Princess,” prefers a mix of nostalgia and thrill. Ruiz, on the other hand, enjoys the horror genre, but only to a certain point.
“This one isn’t spooky, but it’s cute and I love it. I love Twitches and Halloweentown,” Dior told WrestleZone’s Ella Jay. “I forgot how good [Twitches] was. Feel like it’s one of those movies that you forget about and you’re like, ‘Oh, man. This is really good, one and two.’ [Disney Channel has] great Halloween collections]
“[I’m into] definitely less horror, but I do like psychological horror movies, if that makes sense,’ she continued. “I love those [thrillers], but I’m not really a big horror fan. I can’t do gory at all either. I’m a baby.”
Lili Ruiz Is Haunted By The Blair Witch Project, Fan of Wednesday & Stranger Things
In the ring, fans known Lili Ruiz as “La Pescadita,” the spunky Chicago Style Wrestling Women’s Champion. During Halloween season, Ruiz describes herself as a “reserved horror fanatic.”
Part of Ruiz’s hesitation toward the horror genre stems from a traumatizing experience as a young girl being introduced to the 1999 pseudo-documentary, The Blair Witch Project.
“My man loves horror movies, so he is like, let’s go to the movies and watch this. I was just like, ‘Nah.’ I still go, but I’m just plugging my ears and my eyes the whole time,” Ruiz told WrestleZone. “He’s like, ‘Why are you here?’ I want to experience this a little bit. I don’t want to see the whole thing.
“The other day he actually tagged me in a movie that really freaked me out when I was younger, and this was The Blair Witch Project. Bro, when that movie first came out, I thought it was for real. I remember my cousins got the VHS tape and they were like, ‘We’re going to watch this. This is a real like a real thing that happened.’ They put it in and I just remember being so freaked out. I sat through the whole movie, and it’s funny because there’s nothing really scary that happens, but it’s just that vibe of terror and ‘oh my God, what’s going to happen?’ So that is one of my top movies that messed me up as a kid.”
Admittedly, Ruiz isn’t a fan of slasher films, such as 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, either. She does, however, appreciate a bit of mystery mixed with horror elements, such as with Netflix’s Wednesday series and Stranger Things.
“I just finished watching the Wednesday series, which is so good,” she said. “Oh my God, I love it because it’s like spooky season, so you get the spooky vibe. I enjoy it so much. It’s funny because, and I’m sure you know how this feels, when have a background in creative writing or have done news writing, like now when you watch something, you just analyze it. You’re like, ‘Okay, I would have done this, I would have done that,’ but Wednesday, I enjoyed it so much.”
“… I love Stranger Things,” she continued. “Thought that that was such a great series. I started watching the Ed Gein show (Monster: The Ed Gein Story), the guy who put on the skin of his of [victims]. So I told my mom to sit down because I didn’t want to watch it alone, and we watched a little bit. She was like ‘Turn that off!’ That was intense.”
