Top 10 Moments of NXT Takeover: R Evolution – WWE’s Love Letter to Indie Fans

#7 – Kevin Steen Wins in Debut Match

What a freaking debut!

It wasn’t difficult to notice Owens’ emotion on the way to the ring. You can actually see him shed a tear when he stops at the ramp, looks at his video on the tron, and takes a beat to soak in the moment. As they say, you only get one debut…

Owens came out of the gate splashing the hell out CJ Parker, twice, and followed up with a signature cannonball splash into the bottom turnbuckle; a staple of his on the indie scene. He then threw his entire body over the top rope with a gorgeous senton, proving that big men really can fly. The crowd was into the match from the minute he walked out, to the minute he left the stage with loud “Fight Owens Fight” and “Owens’ Gonna Kill You” chants.

They couldn’t have planned that Parker would gash his nose – and apparently CJ got a nasty cut to the bone on his hand in the process – but boy did all that blood elevate this segment from “good” to “phenomenal”. I know that Kevin has become less of a fan of blood in wrestling in recent years, stemming from the must-see Nigel McGuinness documentary that you should see, if you haven’t already. Obviously you can’t always control blood in wrestling, and I give him a ton of credit for embracing the “juice” and wearing that crimson mask like a badge of honor.

As far as debut nights, this has to go up on the Wall of Fame with the best of them.
