WWE’s recently canceled SmackDown taping in Cincinnati may finally have an explanation.
The company has yet to make an official announcement. Nevertheless, a new report suggests the decision could be tied to a larger scheduling adjustment ahead of Labor Day weekend.
The September 4 edition of SmackDown was originally scheduled to take place at the Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
However, the event was recently removed. Furthermore, Ticketmaster informed fans that the show had been canceled and that refunds would be issued automatically.
WWE reportedly considering double TV taping in Charlotte
According to PWInsider, the most likely reason behind the cancellation is WWE’s plan to update its schedule and potentially hold a double television taping on August 31 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The report noted that such a move would allow WWE to record both RAW and SmackDown content in advance. More importantly, it would give production staff and crew members time off during Labor Day weekend while still keeping weekly programming on track.
Adding fuel to that theory, WWE.com has removed both the canceled September 4 SmackDown event in Cincinnati and the August 31 RAW event in Charlotte from its schedule listings. However, tickets for the Charlotte show remain on sale through Ticketmaster. Moreover, the Spectrum Center continues to advertise the event on its website.
As of now, there is no indication that the Charlotte event itself has been canceled. Instead, the situation appears to point toward WWE making adjustments behind the curtain rather than scrapping shows altogether.
Ticketmaster’s notice regarding the Cincinnati event stated: “Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event.”
While WWE has not officially confirmed a double taping, Charlotte has quickly become the city to watch.
Until WWE provides clarification, the September 4 SmackDown remains off the calendar, and the company’s Labor Day weekend plans remain a developing story.
