STARS IN PROGRESS: Roman Reigns & Daniel Bryan Move Up, Wyatt’s TWO WrestleMania Opponents, Ambrose Elevates the I.C. Title & More

STEP UP: Intercontinental Championship

Contrary to what some will say in the comments section, I realize that the Intercontinental title is NOT a Superstar. I got it. Calm down.

It’s my column. I do what I want. Deal with it.

dean ambroseIf you missed Raw this week – and I hardly blame you – Dean Ambrose came out in a rage and talked about the history of great champions in pro wrestling, and all the historic pictures hanging up at WWE headquarters. He flat out stated that he wanted to be one of the best I.C. champions of all time, and get his face on that wall. I popped HUGE for that.

It’s very rare that somebody comes out and says they actually want to be a mid-card champ. They’ve been treated as tertiary belts for so long, those who defend and challenge for them can often be afterthoughts. I dig guys like Cody Rhodes circa 2011, who go out of their way to bring some shine back to these titles that used to mean something.

Unfortunately, I fear this means WWE is going to choose either Ambrose or Barrett to look good in this program. What they could do is book a Best of 5 series that culminated at WrestleMania, making them both look great and creating possible career-rivals in the process. That might be beyond the brilliant minds of WWE creative minds at this point.

Time will tell what happens, but this week the title takes a step up.
