The King of the Ring has been a very important tournament in WWE history since the 1980s. The first prominent winner was Randy Savage, who won it in 1987 and would go on to get a huge push in the coming years, becoming one of WWE’s premier Golden Era superstars. He would only use the “King” gimmick later on after Harley Race had introduced it and inculcated it into his character, becoming a heel “Macho King“.

There have been quite a few years, especially this past decade, where a King of The Ring win has been nothing but a formality and hasn’t resulted in anything bigger. The entire idea of the tournament is that the winner gets a huge push down the line. It’s proven in the fact that it drastically altered the timeline of WWE so much in 1996-1997 (but we’ll get back to that later).

On many occasions, the King of The Ring Tournament served a great purpose and these superstars and legends are the ones who benefited the most from it.
