Back in 2017, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson produced a documentary focusing on youth prison boot camps. Correctional officer Christy Laster worked at one of these in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and was later charged for bribery, grand theft and extortion. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she believes that outtakes from the documentary would prove her innocence, and tried to issue a subpoena to HBO about getting their additional footage.
However, HBO wasn’t a fan of the idea and used New York’s Shield Law, which protects journalists from having to disclose information. Laster’s lawyer argued that the documentary was a celebrity reality show because of Johnson’s involvement, but the judge sided with the actor saying that he was acting in a journalist capacity. Judge Carol Edmead said that the “very broad definition of ‘professional journalist’ encompasses anyone involved in news gathering.”
