Samoa Joe has regained the United States Championship through unconventional circumstances. Meanwhile, Ricochet earned a shot at the champion after winning a fatal five-way on RAW. At Stomping Grounds, Joe defended the United States Championship against Ricochet. Ricochet won the championship after he pinned Joe with a 630 Splash.

The match was a classic clash of size and speed. Ricochet used his amazing athleticism to keep Joe on his toes but Joe used his power to inflict punishment on his opponent. Joe planted Ricochet with a slam and dominated the high flier for a bit. A stiff powerbomb nearly got Joe the win. Ricochet rallied and dropped the champion with a boot on the ear. A dive to the outside gave the challenger all the momentum. But Joe turned the tide with a powerslam for a near fall. A clothesline turned Ricochet inside out but he still kicked out. Joe dodged the 630 Splash but Ricochet hit a Codebreaker. Ricochet pinned Joe after a 630 Splash to win the championship.
