WWE issued the following statement to Wrestlezone in regard to reports of Friday’s SmackDown taping in Detroit being relocated to the WWE Performance Center this week.
“WWE has not cancelled Friday Night SmackDown in Detroit, however, based on the current situation, we are putting contingency plans in place in the event that upcoming WWE shows are cancelled by government officials, civil authorities and/or local venues.”
Earlier tonight, it was reported by PWInsider.com that WWE decided to tape this week’s episode of SmackDown at the PC due to issues related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) has made quite an impact on not only professional wrestling, but the sports and entertainment world overall. Several major events including E3 have been postponed, the NBA indefinitely suspended their season after a player contracted the virus, and actor Tom Hanks has reportedly contracted it as well. President Donald Trump also suspended all travel to and from Europe for the next month.
Tomorrow’s episode of SmackDown previously announced an appearance from John Cena and Paige, as well as Jeff Hardy’s return. WrestleMania 36’s status has been in question in recent days but as of now, the event is still scheduled to take place. Tampa city officials will meet tomorrow to discuss the status of major events in the region.
