Cody Pays Tribute To Dusty Rhodes: ‘Your Shadow Is Far From A Burden’

Five years ago, pro wrestling lost Dusty Rhodes, one of its greatest legends. Not only was The American Dream an icon that cemented his legacy every night in the ring and on the mic, but he was also the man who guided the early years of WWE’s third brand. As NXT’s man behind the curtain, he created some of the best storylines to come out of Stamford in a generation and inspired many of the stars currently on top of the main roster.

As a tribute to the anniversary of his passing, Cody Rhodes posted a touching tweet honoring his father. From mourning his loss at the unveiling of his hall of fame statue to a superhero representation of their relationship, the current American Nightmare states that, while he wants to escape from the shadow of his famous father, he still “love[s] and value[s] being Dusty’s kid.” The fact that Cody has gone on to build up a proto-replacement for WCW, the company where Dusty was loved most, only adds to the tragedy of his loss.

Thanks for the best childhood, thanks for allowing me to play in your game – I hate this day and I hate that you’re missing all of this.

Your shadow is far from a burden. It’s a warm and comforting place that although I aim to escape, I still love and value being Dusty’s kid.
