‘The Suicide Squad’ Underwhelms On Opening Weekend With $26.5M Box Office Number

John Cena’s new film ‘The Suicide Squad’ opened up to an underwhelming $26.5M box office figure across over 4000 movie theaters this weekend. Challenges posed for the release include movie-goers staying home due to the COVID-19 Delta variant along with the hybrid theatrical-home launch that the movie had.

The movie topped domestic box office charts this weekend but fell short of the projected $30M opening figure according to Variety. The movie cost over $185M to produce/promote and has a long way to go before it breaks even. Internationally, it added another $35M from 70 overseas territories, bringing its global total to $72.2M.

The movie received excellent reviews from critics online but the feeling is that the ‘R’ rating and free release on HBO Max hurt box office numbers. Just one month ago, Disney and Marvel released ‘Black Widow’ to a pandemic-era best $80M on the big screen according to Hollywood Reporter.

John Cena is expected to remain with WWE all of August and at least the early part of September as he is advertised for WWE’s return to Madison Square Garden.
