CM Punk is not a fan of Hulk Hogan… or some of the tall tales he’s told over the years.
CM Punk was a guest on Barstool Sports’ Rasslin’ with Brandon F. Walker and was asked about how it feels being the center of a massive pop like the one fans experienced when he returned in Chicago. Walker noted how only a few select men, like Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin might know what that feels like, and Punk explained why it’s hard for him to put into words what he experienced, but he wants to help the AEW roster get to that level.
“I’d say there’s levels to this, and you don’t know until you ascend to those levels. One of the things I’ve always hated about the wrestling business is it seems like—there’s exceptions to the rule, some people are good about it—but there’s always been people that have gotten to a certain level and they’re almost taught, and the culture is fostered for them to believe that they need to make sure nobody else gets to that level. They don’t want anybody to quote-unquote ‘steal their spot.’ You throwing my name in the hat with somebody like Steve Austin, who arguably, the greatest star the business has ever seen, right? A lot of this is subjective though,” Punk stated.
“You could make the argument, ‘Hulk Hogan’s a bigger star than Steve Austin,’ but then you look at business periods and eras, box office receipts and all that other stuff. I think Hogan’s a piece of sh-t, so obviously, I’m going to be like, ‘Steve Austin, yea’ but that’s another podcast,” Punk said. “What it feels like? I don’t have the words to describe what it feels like, but I know what I feel like is I want to help everybody on the AEW roster f-cking get there. That’s what I know.”
Punk later responded to a clip of the quote from the interview, taking another jab at Hogan and some of the outrageous claims he’s made over the years.
“Brother, just tune in tonight,” Punk wrote. “Just got off the phone with Arthur Ashe and he’s excited to host us tonight. Gonna party with Belushi in nyc after I slam Baba. Hope I don’t tear anything in my back. Metallica.”
Hogan once claimed to have partied with Belushi after WrestleMania 2 in 1986, which wouldn’t be possible since the comedian died in 1982. Normally, this would be considered as just a mental error, but Hogan also claimed Metallica’s Lars Ulrich asked him to join the band in the early 80s, said he was going to fight in the original UFC, he once wrestled 400 days in one year, and has regularly changed details about how many muscles he tore and how heavy Andre The Giant weighed when he slammed him at WrestleMania III. (There’s also the “George Foreman Grill” tale, too.)
Despite not being a fan of Hogan, Punk says he is a fan of NXT’s Bron Breakker. Plenty of fans have chimed in about the former Rex Steiner’s name being changed, but Punk said he has the ultimate “stupid name” himself and he’ll be just fine when it’s all said and done.
“CM Punk is the ultimate stupid name. Bron is awesome and going to be fine. He should be Steiner, but it’s not his fault. Changing my name to “Killer Brooks,” he replied.
