Ricky Starks wants to get back in the ring a bit more, but he understands why things might be progressing a bit slower than he’d like.
Ricky Starks was a recent guest on Rasslin’ with Brandon F. Walker and talked about his eventual return to the ring on a bit of a more regular basis. Starks has been limited in AEW this year, only competing nine times since winning the FTW Title in July. Starks came back from a neck injury in April to win the title, but he says things are moving along slowly despite being cleared this summer.
“That, I mean, that’s not, I don’t think that’s a question for me. The thing is, so back in April, I had a fracture in my neck and I had fractured my neck on Dynamite, and I was out for like three months. Then I came back and had the match in July in Austin, where I won the FTW Title. And since then… I’ve been on and off, in terms of like having matches and whatnot. I’ve been cleared since July. The only thing I can think of is, AEW and Tony Khan specifically, they’re just taking things slow. So I look at it as a blessing but then you know, you have the other part where I do get antsy and I wanna be in there. I wanna be wrestling all the time. But…”
Starks also spoke about staying over and getting even more over with fans when he was hurt, noting that it was a great opportunity to maximize his television time despite not being able to compete.
“I think it was through, obviously I love to talk. I mean if that isn’t evident, I love to talk. So I think what Tony did was, he saw that as an opportunity to parlay that to like, still being on TV, but more in a managerial role per se, and then I got on Rampage in commentary. I was doing commentary on Dark, and that’s like, I want you to understand the level of trust somebody has to give you to go on national TV, with sponsors and everything and say, hey I need you to be a commentator. So that is not lost on me. I think that was his plan in keeping me around and more relevant, especially since some people can’t talk. And then if they can’t talk, they get injured, and then what?”
