Bully Ray Comments On His In-Ring Future, Describes His Focus On Specific Stories

WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray has had a legendary career, and while he’d be content if he never wrestled another match, he is still compelled to tell certain stories in a wrestling ring.

During a recent appearance on The Wrestling Perspective Podcast, when asked about his future as a wrestler, Bully Ray, 50, noted that when it comes to any goals on his list, he doesn’t have any unfinished business. That being said, he has some ideas for specific stories with particular individuals. He also explained that he’s not interested in signing a contract without having a specific direction.

“I have done everything that I have wanted to do,” said Ray. “I have wrestled everywhere that I wanna wrestle. There’s not an arena on the planet, I’m very, very blessed to, if I never wrestled again, I’m so cool with it, it’s not funny. However, there are certain things that do interest me. Particular stories with particular talents. Not just going to a company and signing a contract and then, ‘Okay you’ll be here for a year or two or three years, and, ‘Well what am I gonna be doing?’ ‘We don’t know, we’ll come up with something.’ I’m not interested.

“If it’s a particular person with a particular story with dedicated television time, then I’m interested.”

Ray then used his recent match with Jerry “The King” Lawler as an example; he agreed to work the bout because it was a fresh matchup with a living legend, and he was driven by the emotion this opportunity gave him. He made it clear that this response has become crucial for him when he considers the matches he takes, though he repeated that he has some stories with specific talent in mind.

“Like this thing with Lawler [for Battleground Championship Wrestling],” said Ray. “They called me, they’re like, do you wanna wrestle Jerry Lawler? Yes, I’ve never wrestled Jerry Lawler. It’s Jerry Lawler. To me, it’s a no-brainer. Did I ever think that I was gonna have a singles match with Jerry Lawler? No. Was it on my bucket list? No, but it’s not something I’m gonna turn down.

“It was an immediate yes because it interests me, it evoked emotion. If you can’t evoke emotion in me, I could care less. I’ve become so fueled by real, raw organic emotion that that’s it for me. Do I see guys out there that I would love to sink my teeth into because I know I could present story, elevate a certain guy? Listen, no matter how over you are in this business, you need somebody at the next level.”

The former Dudley Boy then emphasized that, with these matchups in mind, he believes he could be a strong asset for a company if he got the chance to do so.

“I know of certain talent out there that I could do some really great business with, that would draw money and pop ratings,” said Ray.

Time will tell what Ray’s in-ring future holds, but for now, he remains one of the featured co-hosts of the popular Busted Open Radio show.
