AJ Styles Names Rey Mysterio As A Potential ‘Legacy’ Opponent At WrestleMania

AJ Styles is one of the most well-traveled professional wrestlers of all time, but he’s not sure what’s next for him at WrestleMania.

WWE star AJ Styles spoke with WrestleZone’s Dominic DeAngelo at WrestleMania 38 and was asked if he could envision who else he might face off with at the “Show of Shows.” Styles had mentioned wanting to work with The Undertaker ahead of their Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36, and was vocal about wanting a WrestleMania match with Edge ahead of this year’s event.

Styles mentioned Rey Mysterio as one of the names he could possibly share that stage with, then noted that he’s starting to reach a point where he’s one of the longest-tenured wrestlers left on the WWE roster.

“It’s hard to say. I mean, who are those guys that when you think back, is it Rey Mysterio? I’ve never really had a long program or anything with him,” Styles noted. “I’ve wrestled him once or twice but I never had a story with him. But, I don’t know, Edge [is this year]… I’ve tried to get Triple H in the ring but it looks like that’s not gonna happen. We’re running out of these guys who’ve been around longer than me.”

Mysterio and Styles have wrestled four singles matches against each other, one of which was Mysterio’s United States Championship win on RAW in November 2019. The most recent match took place as an Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match on the January 31 episode of RAW but as Styles has pointed out, the two never had a real storyline or big stage to share.

Styles was then asked about which locker room leaders he takes advice from, and he said he learns from just about everyone. Styles said he takes something from nearly every single opponent that he faces and adds it to expand his game.

“I picked every guy’s brain that I possibly could because the only way that I can get better is to get as much information and some guys are stingy with it, so you just wanna get a little bit. Taker, Edge is even one of those guys, I’ve picked the brain of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. But if I can just get a little bit of what they know. I wanna be me, I don’t wanna be them,” Styles said. “But if I can take little parts of what they know and make myself better, then that’s icing on the cake.”
