Brody King believes the House of Black is a beneficial part of AEW programming, and he’s also confident in the group’s status an AEW original idea.
King joined AEW on the January 12 episode of AEW Dynamite, where he aligned with Malakai Black. A few weeks later, Buddy Matthews made his AEW debut and aligned with the duo. Since then, the trio has been an impressive unit; most notably, they defeated PAC, Penta Oscuro, and Erick Redbeard at AEW Revolution.
During an appearance on the Wrestling Perspective Podcast, King explained that while plenty of people may not “get” what the group is going for, the House of Black can appeal to a niche audience that otherwise might not be getting catered to by the rest of AEW’s programming. Plus, regardless of what one thinks about the trio’s dark characters, there’s no denying their in-ring skill, which should appeal to all wrestling fans.
“I don’t think that a lot of people would understand what we were going for,” said King. “I don’t think people at AEW really understand but it’s getting, they always try to cater to the masses, but sometimes you need to cater to that niche audience that is under-represented and maybe doesn’t have something to really latch onto. And I feel like something like House of Black kind of fits the mold. And on top of that, everyone individually in the group is a great wrestler, so when we have these big matches like the one at Revolution and we kinda just go balls to the wall, that’s gonna impress and make a fan out of most people, even if you didn’t understand what the promos were or like what our whole look is about. You’re gonna go, ‘Damn, those guys were awesome.’
With any stable, it’s natural to think about expansion and evolution. King noted that, because the trio is still so new, they haven’t deeply considered adding more members yet. But they remain focused on becoming a staple of the company. With this in mind, the powerhouse noted that it stands apart because, unlike some other teams, the House of Black was entirely created in AEW.
“We haven’t really discussed about like adding new people because we’re just, with Buddy and I being so new to the company, and even Malakai has only been there since August, it’s still like, we’re still trying to like really establish ourselves and make the House of Black like a staple in AEW,” said King. “Because it’s one of the few things in AEW that was created there. You have a lot of things that were created elsewhere that are kind of brought there and like have gotten over there but [House of Black] has been fully created at AEW.”
House of Black defeated Fuego Del Sol, Evil Uno and Stu Grayson on the April 1 episode of AEW Rampage; the trio continues to tease its next step in vignettes on AEW programming.
