Billy Corgan sees the future for professional wrestling in a digital world.
Knox News recently spoke with Corgan, who announced the National Wrestling Alliance would bring its “Alwayz Ready” pay-per-view to Nashville in June. Corgan then spoke about how the NWA has embraced a digital model and said that he sees it as a focus for their long-term future.
“I love the digital revolution, and I think digital streaming will be at the center of what we do over the next 20 years,” Corgan said. “It’s probably the best thing to ever happen to wrestling.”
Billy Corgan also spoke about seeing the next wrestling wave embracing some of the styles that were trademarks of Southern wrestling, feeling like they’re coming back around again. Corgan said that Memphis and Nashville wrestling are different in some ways, but they’re both still grounded in reality.
“Those styles still proliferate. Trends rise and fall,” Corgan said. “That style is about to have a massive comeback.”
Corgan also spoke about AEW’s influence on the business, noting how their success has allowed people to believe there could be true competition for WWE.
“In the short term, it’s difficult because the story of a company daring even to take on WWE has kind of dominated people’s focus,” Corgan said. “But I also think that the advantage is now, when I’m having meetings with people … they’re suddenly way more open (to the idea) there can be competition to WWE.”
