William Regal Will Never Wrestle Again, Doesn’t Want To Tarnish His Legacy

William Regal has been a featured member of the AEW roster since he debuted in March, but he hasn’t wrestled a match yet.

Regal, 54, joined AEW at the Revolution pay-per-view and aligned with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. The trio is now known as the Blackpool Combat Club, and Wheeler Yuta has joined the three men to make it a quartet. The BCC is undefeated in trios action, and every time they compete, Regal watches on from commentary. The former NXT general manager got physical on the May 11 episode of AEW Dynamite, when his stable brawled with the Jericho Appreciation Society. As a result, some fans have been wonderong if Regal might compete in his first official match since 2013 at some point soon.

In an interview with Alistair McGeorge of Metro.co.uk, Regal stated that he will not wrestle again, as he’s beyond content with the career that he’s already had.

“No, never,” said Regal. “No. My last official match was against Cesaro. My last few years, I didn’t realise – it’s come out recently, I had a serious neck problem for 20-odd years. It finally caught up with me.

“All I ever wanted was a 20-year wrestling career when I started – I ended up with a 30-year wrestling career. I couldn’t have asked for any more. If you’re not me and you’re just looking from the outside, ‘Oh he should have been this, he should have been that’ – no.”

Regal went on to describe how he was happy with his career, even before he came to the United States and worked for WCW and WWE. His impressive accomplishments with both companies were “a bonus”, according to the veteran. He went on to describe how he dealt with health issues in the later years of his in-ring career, including a “major” heart problem that he only learned of later.

Now that he’s thriving alongside Blackpool Combat Club in AEW, Regal stated that it would be “ridiculous” to lace up his boots again, though he knows he can still perform at a high level and he physically feels great.

“I can get in the ring now and wrestle just as good as I ever did,” said Regal. “In fact people are like, “You wanna stop a bit”. Training, I can get in there and do that,’ he added. ‘I still train, do all my squats and push-ups that I never thought I’d be able to do.”

“But I look like a 54 year old. I don’t want the memories of me – I can still wrestle just as good as I used to. In fact, better because I’ve got full circulation now after god knows how many years.”

The former WWE King of the Ring winner also made it clear that he doesn’t want to tarnish his legacy by wrestling again when he was satisfied with his final official match. Plus, he believes he had his turn, and now it’s time for the next generation to shine.

‘I wrestled my son for an hour before Christmas in the PC in Orlando. I can wrestle. I’d rather that match with Cesaro be my final thing. ‘Elvis has left the building’. That’s why Colonel Tom Parker never let Elvis do an encore.

“Don’t ruin it for myself. That was as good as a match as it could ever be for me to finish my career, and 30 years in, it’s somebody else’s turn now. Why ruin it?”
