John Cena Hopes To Return To WWE Soon: ‘I’ve Been Gone Too Long’

John Cena hopes to return to WWE at some point soon.

Cena had been the company’s top star for several years until he transitioned into a part-time role and started focusing on his acting career. The 16-time world champion came back last summer and resumed his presence as a featured star on WWE programming. But after he lost to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021, his non-wrestling projects became his priority again.

Speaking with Adam Glyn of Adam’s Apple, when asked about when fans can expect to see him again, Cena made it clear that he hopes to return to WWE “soon”. He noted that his 20th anniversary is coming up, but he also pointed out that he doesn’t want to turn down the opportunities that are available to him. Still, the leader of the Cenation stated that he’s been “gone too long.”

“Oh, soon,” said Cena. “I know in WWE years I turn 20 pretty soon, so that’s a pretty big thing. And then from a pretty storied class of folks. Batista, Randy Orton, Brock [Lesnar], kinda all turned 20 this year, so I’m aware that that’s coming around the corner and who knows? But it’s one of those hard truths to bear, there’s a lot of cool stuff going on and I don’t want to say no to any of these opportunities that are on my doorstep. So I don’t know when I’ll be back, but hopefully it’s soon. I’ve been gone for too long.”

Cena also discussed his shift to the acting world and emphasized how being okay with failure has been a vital aspect of the journey.

“Just be okay with failing,” said Cena. “This quote-on-quote transition has taken me what, 15 years now? So from The Marine on to now, a lot of failure in there. You guys have watched. Don’t be afraid to fail and it’s okay to have a great support system around you, certainly the WWE audience. I’ve said on multiple occasions and I’ll keep saying it until I have the chance, they made me into the man I am today.”
