Saraya (Paige) Didn’t Know AJ Lee Was Going To Retire, Reflects On WrestleMania 31 Match

Paige teamed with AJ Lee in what ended up being the latter’s final run as an in-ring performer.

Speaking with the media during a scrum at Starrcast V, Saraya (fka Paige) was asked about her relationship with AJ Lee and how they worked together at WrestleMania 31. Saraya said that she didn’t know AJ was going to retire going into the weekend, otherwise she would’ve been upset over it, noting how they had a great relationship.

“So, we didn’t really know that it was going to be her last match. She actually told me afterward ‘I don’t know if I’m going to continue after this…’ So she didn’t let us know that, which I think is really sweet because I would’ve been so sad [if I knew going in]. I love AJ, we were such good friends and we still are, I just mean like we were traveling together and always trying to keep kayfabe too,” Saraya explained. “I remember she’d be in the front seat and I’d be driving by the arena, there’s fans outside waiting and she’d be ducking underneath my jacket [to hide] and I’m like, ‘AJ sucks!’ [to the fans, who didn’t know she was there]

“I called her my fairy godmother too, she also got me this pair of Doc Martens when I was first going to the UK to wrestle. They had the Union Jack on the toe and she was just awesome, just fantastic. I would have been so bummed out [if I knew she was retiring].”

Saraya then when on to note that they actually did have a match where AJ knew her neck was bad, and they spent the entire time not bumping to prevent injury.

“It was the one at SummerSlam where I won the Divas Championship,” she explained. “If you watch it back, we spent the whole match not taking one bump. There was one where I superkicked her and I went, ‘Oh shit!’ and she took this like crazy, Matrix-like bump and fell down. I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry!’ and she’s like, ‘It’s OK!’ [laughs]

Paige and AJ Lee teamed up at WrestleMania 31 to defeat The Bella Twins. The following night on RAW, AJ and Paige teamed with Naomi to beat Natalya & The Bella Twins in what is now AJ’s final match in her career.
