During Gunther‘s time with the WWE, it’s been clear that he is one of the most dominant superstars in the company, and he credits that dominance in part due to the respect he believes WWE gives him.
Speaking to Keith Whittier in a recent interview for his show WittyWhittier, the reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion was asked about how his experience has been in the WWE so far. According to the superstar, it’s been a “very good” time so far, and he praised WWE for how they’ve respected his freedom.
“It’s been very good,” Gunther said. “So far. I signed with the company in 2019 for NXT UK. And yeah, I can’t complain. It’s been really good. I’ve basically from the person I’ve been before, on the independence, I’m still myself, I’ve always been treated with respect, and always had the freedom to be myself more or less. And yeah, that’s the case still, to this day.”
Gunther was also asked about returning to wrestling in front of fans, as opposed to competing in things like the ThunderDome and other empty arenas over the past couple of years. For Gunther, despite loving the fans, he did also come to enjoy the empty arenas as well.
“I gotta say, for me, I enjoyed those events we had with empty arenas,” said Gunther. “During that time I was in NXT UK…I’m not bad with taking track of timespans and stuff, so I would say it was at least a year and maybe a little bit more. Our shows happened in an empty building, and got taped in an empty building. But I kind of liked that atmosphere, it was different. And for the style, I have a very physical style and I think I benefited from that a lot too. But to finally be back in an arena with an audience, and to have that feeling back is definitely the preferred choice, I would say.
“I’m glad it’s back to normal. And we do a lot of live shows and get to wrestle in front of a lot of different people in a lot of different cities and countries. And yeah, that’s what wrestling is, always was to me personally, even back then as a fan. I always enjoyed wrestling the most as life experience, not so much as in TV experience. I think that’s when our sport is at its purest form, I would say is a life event. So I’m glad we’re back at it.”
