AJ Styles: How Can You Argue WWE World Heavyweight Title Isn’t Secondary?

AJ Styles shares his thoughts on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Styles and Seth Rollins won the SmackDown and RAW sides of a tournament for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and they will clash in the finals. The title was created in response to Roman Reigns‘ dominance as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, as he has held both of WWE’s world titles for over a year. The way WWE introduced the new championship has drawn some criticism, as it has come across as a secondary title.

Speaking with Joseph Staszewski of the New York Post, Styles addressed this perception and questioned how one could argue that the new championship wasn’t a secondary title. He pointed out that WWE made it because Reigns held the others.

“Is it a secondary?” Styles said. “Well if the RAW championship is held by Roman, the SmackDown championship is held by Roman, then how can you argue that it’s not? We had to make a new championship because Roman holds them all.

“What happens if he decides to wrestle for the World Heavyweight championship? It is what it is and we got what we got. If we make the best of it, and if and when Roman does challenge [for it], we beat the brakes off of him, whomever it might be, then we’ll see what title’s secondary.”

Styles also brought up Reigns’ status as a part-time star and noted that it’s what everyone should strive for. He explained that he even told Reigns that, if he could, he would have that schedule.

“This is what you want to do, this is what you want to be,” Styles said. “This is what you’re trying to get to in your career. I’m not mad at him. I told him, ‘if I could do it I would, but I’m not Roman Reigns.'”

Styles will face Karrion Kross on the May 26 episode of WWE SmackDown. Check out the card here.

WrestleZone will have coverage of WWE Night of Champions as it airs on May 27.
