Becky Lynch On Struggles With Post-Weaning Depression: It Got ‘Dark’ For A Few Months

Becky Lynch reveals that she was struggling with post-weaning depression over two years after she gave birth to her daughter, Roux, in December 2020.

Speaking on WWE After The Bell with Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick (via PEOPLE), Lynch described how her post-weaning depression led to a “dark” few months. She noted that she was “on edge” around WrestleMania 39.

“It kind of got really, really dark for a few months and I was in a really bad spot,” Lynch said. “It was kind of one of those things where you’re trying to pull yourself out of it, because you know mentally, ‘God, I’ve got a great life. I’ve got a great husband. I’ve got a great baby, and I’m doing this thing at the highest level that I love.’ But no reasoning with yourself was able to overcome that level of depression.”

Lynch explained that she didn’t know she could get post-weaning depression, and learning about it in the first place was a significant step in her journey, as it led to her finding out about potential treatment methods.

“I didn’t know you could get post-weaning depression,” Lynch said. “So, not even knowing that that was a thing I think also hurt me because, why am I feeling like this? Why am I acting like this? [I was] not realizing that this is actually a common thing that happens and there are ways you can treat it.

“Once you figure out the cause of all of that, then you’re off to the races and then you’re back and then you can appreciate everything. But yeah, for a few months there, it was rough.”

The WWE star also credited a fellow mother in the company who helped her realize what she was going through and, in doing so, put her on the path to recovery.

“Thankfully, somebody that we all know — I won’t put her on the spot — she told me what was happening because it had happened to her,” Lynch said. “She gave me some tips, and I kind of kept thinking it was gonna pass, ‘it was gonna pass, it was gonna pass,’ and then it really wasn’t passing.”

After Trish Stratus turned on Lynch on the April 10 episode of WWE RAW, “The Man” was absent for a few weeks, and she revealed that she actually injured her foot in her match on the show. She stated that this setback turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as she had no choice but to face her struggles during her absence.

“It was such a blessing,” Lynch said. “I really had to face everything that I was going through because when you go, go, go, you can be so distracted but you realize that you’re getting quite explosive, that you just kind of get on with it. So, I really had to face it and learn how to deal with it.”

Ultimately, Lynch noted that she turned to meditation, supplements and acupuncture before she found a solution that worked and started feeling like herself again.

Lynch has bounced back in the ring as well; she qualified for the Women’s Money in the Bank match by defeating Sonya Deville, so she will compete for the briefcase at the premium live event on July 1.
