Cody Rhodes: Maybe Brock Lesnar And I Had A ‘Bond By Battle’ After SummerSlam Match

Cody Rhodes reflects on his special moment with Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam.

Rhodes and Lesnar have been feuding for several months. They clashed in a rubber match at WWE SummerSlam, and Rhodes emerged victorious. After the bell, Lesnar shook Rhodes’ hand, hugged him, and raised his arm.

During the WWE SummerSlam Press Conference, Chris Van Vliet asked Rhodes about the post-match moment. Rhodes noted that the significance of the moment hadn’t fully dawned on him. He also described how he felt like he and Lesnar may have been bonded by battle.

“I got asked a question right after it was over,” Rhodes said. “We were just filming some behind-the-scenes content, and I don’t think it’s dawned on me, what a moment like that really means. This run, since I came back to WWE, has been consistently surprising to me in every way. I think that’s why I am so touched by it all. It’s real. It’s as real as it could get in this world. That’ll be something that I look at and have a very deep, deep appreciation.

“I mean, the guy also hocked a loogie on me in the middle of the match. He has give me more German suplexes, F5s, F5s through tables. Absolutely eviscerated me on many levels. Somehow, someway, I felt like there was maybe just this bond by battle there in that final moment.”

Cody Rhodes Found His Harley Race

Rhodes continued by expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to wrestle Lesnar. He highlighted the unique nature of Lesnar’s talent. “The American Nightmare” also brought up the way Dusty Rhodes looked at Harley Race and noted that he might have found his version of that in Lesnar.

“I’m very grateful for what’s happened,” Rhodes said. “I don’t want to wrestle Brock Lesnar again, but I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do it and to compete at his level. When he’s gone, and I don’t know when that’s gonna be, when he’s gone, I think the world will realize what we got. He’s a freaking unicorn. That’s just a very unique, once-in-a-lifetime individual.

“To have that moment at the end, I thought a lot about Brock, looking at him tonight. It reminded me of how my dad looked at Harley Race. I thought, ‘Maybe I’ve got my Harley Race.’ Just because there’s nobody tougher than Brock Lesnar. Again, that was a special moment. I’ll know what it really meant in the days to come.”
