Gable Steveson is returning to wrestling outside of WWE.
United World Wrestling (UWW) announced that Steveson will compete in the 2023 World Championships in freestyle wrestling. Per UWW, the World Championships will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from September 16-24. Freestyle wrestling will kick off the competition on September 16.
The announcement noted that the 2023 World Championships are important on the road to the 2024 Paris Olympic games, as it is the initial phase of the qualifying events.
In 2020, Steveson won an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling. Steveson also won gold in 2017, when he competed in the Junior World Championship. He was a two-time national champion wrestler during his time at the University of Minnesota.
Steveson made his WWE in-ring debut at NXT Great American Bash. There, his match with Baron Corbin went to a double count-out, and they brawled after the bell.
As of this writing, it’s unclear how Steveson competing in the tournament will affect his WWE career. WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
