Hangman Page says he has had a frustrating year, but he feels reinvigorated coming out on the other side.
Preivously, Hangman Page had been one of AEW‘s top stars, and he memorably beat Kenny Omega to win the AEW World Championship. Since he lost the title, he has been involved in short rivalries, and he competed in the pre-show battle royale at AEW All Out. In recent months, he has been feuding with Swerve Strickland, and the rivalry has brought him back into the spotlight.
Speaking with Raj Prashad of Uproxx Sports, Hangman Page admitted that he felt frustrated, and he considered his options at his lowest point. However, he noted that these struggles have helped him find the part of himself that loves wrestling agaib.
“At my lowest in all of this in the past couple of years, the thing that — I don’t want to say kept me motivated, but kept me going, was that I knew I needed to continue to do this to provide for my family,” Hangman Page said. “It was not something that I could walk away from.”
“I kind of found that at the bottom, knowing I was going to continue doing this, knowing that deep down there’s still a part of me who enjoyed it and loved it. I needed to throw myself into it more. Because if I’m going to be here, I damn well better have fun and enjoy it. That’s what all of this, for better or worse — (and it) has been a lot of awful, awful shit that’s happened — but for better or worse has helped me in a lot of ways to really feel something again.”
Hangman Page: Swerve Strickland Helped Motivate Me
Throughout Hangman Page’s feud with Swerve Strickland, the two stars have taken some heated shots at each other. The former world champion explained that Strickland said some things that were hard to hear, but they helped motivate him.
“I needed to be challenged mentally,” Page said. “I needed something to really sink my teeth into and regain some passion and desire that maybe had slipped away to some extent over the past year and a half. (Strickland) said some things that were hard to hear, but I needed to hear them and I’m very glad that I did because it’s motivated me to fix those things. All the things that have happened since then have been even bigger motivators to be the best me that I can be.”
At AEW Full Gear, Page will face Swerve Strickland in a Texas Death Match. WrestleZone will have coverage of the show as it airs on November 18.
