NJPW Announces IWGP Global Title Will Replace US Title

New Japan Pro-Wrestling will introduce a new championship at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.

David Finlay previously smashed the IWGP United States Championship at NJPW Power Struggle. Will Ospreay had also been carrying the IWGP UK Championship in recognition of his homeland, but Finlay smashed that as well. The company announced that a new title would be unveiled at Wrestle Kingdom 18. There, Finlay would face Jon Moxley and Will Ospreay for the title.

In an update, NJPW confirmed that the company will crown the inaugural IWGP Global Champion at the show. The announcement noted that NJPW’s presence will grow not just in the UK and the United States, but throughout Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

The announcement also noted that bringing back the defunct IWGP Intercontinental Championship was considered. However, the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship was deemed to be the most fitting name.

Will Ospreay commented on the news by noting that the IWGP Global Championship seems perfect for someone who has two contracts. Ospreay revealed that he signed with AEW at AEW Full Gear, but he is still currently under contract with NJPW.

WrestleZone will have coverage of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 as it airs on January 4.
