Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is one of, if not the most popular, WWE Superstars turned Hollywood actors. Currently, The Rock has been pulling double duty by playing a key role in WWE and also acting in movies. Now, his latest film, The Smashing Machine, has gotten its official theatrical release date.
The Smashing Machine is a biopic about popular MMA fighter Mark Kerr. The Rock plays the lead role of Mark Kerr. In the film, The People’s Champion looks almost like a carbon copy of Mark Kerr in the film.
The film now has its release date. The Smashing Machine will be released this fall. The official release date has been set for October 3, 2025, as reported by Deadline.
The film wrapped shooting in August 2024 and landed a distribution deal through A24.
What is The Smashing Machine about?
The Smashing Machine stars Dwayne Johnson along with co-star Emily Blunt. The film is written, directed, and produced by Benny Safdie. The Rock’s Seven Bucks production company is attached to the film, with Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia serving as producers. The project covers Kerr balancing his MMA career and struggles with addiction, love, and friendship. It is an adaptation of the 2002 HBO documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Mark Kerr.
In a past interview with Variety, Johnson revealed that part of his motivation to join The Smashing Machine stemmed from Safdie’s great vision for the project.
“Benny wants to create, and continues to push the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting,” Johnson said. “I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle [and] pain.”
