Matt Hardy sheds a bit of light on what his ‘Broken’ counterpart was up to in the Big Apple.
Last week, Matt and Jeff Hardy were on site in Times Square in New York City. Both were in their respective ‘Broken’ personas, with Jeff picking up the Brother Nero mantle. Matt spoke with WrestleZone to promote TNA Slammiversary and shared a bit more about why they were there, noting that it’s linked to TNA’s ad campaign for the pay-per-view.
“[The Broken Hardys] were going to the most populated area, probably on the planet, which was Times Square. And we were just going to go and see what essences that we have known from throughout the years were there, hanging out and doing things. We had a lot of really fun crazy interactions. And it was wild because we just did Subway Mania a day or so before that. Only in New York City could you get away with things like this. And we were like, ‘Hey if we go full Broken, and we’re in Times Square, let’s just try and make a scene. Let’s see what happens.’”
Matt Hardy says ‘goal accomplished’
Hardy said that spectators initially didn’t know what to think, but it quickly evolved into a mob scene that included photo opportunities.
“I am there, I’m full Broken. And Jeff, I crack him up half the time. Because once I commit to a schtick, I am totally committed. I’d say some wild things. But we are there doing our deal. And people were like, ‘Oh my God! That’s Matt and Jeff Hardy. That’s the Hardy Boys, man!’ And then there are people bowing down to us. ‘Oh my God! Can we get a picture?’ Ended up being a mob scene before it was all set and done. There were people crying, talking about these great moments when they were children and how we inspired and influenced them. So, it was pretty special. And we were going in there to kind of create a scene and try and drum up business for Slammiversary, and excite people for it. And I think we got that goal accomplished.”

The Hardy Boyz are more influential than just pro wrestling
Matt said that the Hardys can’t walk a block in New York City without being recognized a few times. He still feels blessed to be on television in the capacity he is, and noted how the Hardys’ reputation goes beyond pro wrestling.
“We are recognized by people who are not even wrestling fans, who have heard of the Hardy Boys. They know who we are because we have been in culture, rap songs and stuff. There is stuff all over SoundCloud talking about the Hardys and jumping of the top rope, breaking tables, and jumping off ladders. It’s wild, man. But it’s cool how we are kind of ingrained in culture. We are even more influential to people than just pro wrestlers, which is wild to think.”
Since the interview was recorded, TNA released a new video sharing some of ‘Broken’ Matt and Brother Nero’s fan encounters. Our full interview with Matt Hardy will be released soon.
