Zelina Vega says Vince McMahon allowed her to use a new accent on WWE TV. She also went to another royal figure to get his approval, too.
In 2021, WWE introduced the Queen of the Ring tournament. Zelina Vega won the finals by defeating Doudrop, who now goes by Piper Niven, and became the first-ever Queen of the Ring. After her win, she took on the name Queen Zelina and started using a British and Australian accent as part of her character.
In a recent interview with Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Zelina Vega said Vince McMahon asked if she could do an accent, and when she said she could try, he encouraged her to use it.
“That’s where the weird Australian, British kind of accent started. So yeah, because Vince asked me, can you do an accent? I was like, I could do a really bad one. And he’s like, that’s even better. Do that! I’m like, All right, cool. So yeah, that’s how it started.”
Vega also revealed she spoke with Booker T and Sharmell about the idea and advised her to make it feel her own.
“I did talk to Booker T right before I won it and I was like, ‘Hey, are you cool with me doing an accent if I end up doing this?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, for sure.’ I was talking to him and Sharmell, he’s like, ‘Make sure you make it yours. But whatever feels natural to you, just amplify that.’ So it was cool to get to talk to them right before it happened, because for me, he’s my favorite. King Booker was my favorite.”
