Stephanie Vaquer Came Up With Her Signature Move By Accident

Stephanie Vaquer peels back the curtain on The Devil’s Kiss.

Before she puts away her opponents with her SVB, Stephanie Vaquer usually drives her opponents into the mat with rear leg triangle head slams, a move she calls the Devil’s Kiss. During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Vaquer opened up about the process of creating this signature move.

“[It was a] mistake,” she said. “At training, I tried to do a pin. I try to do something with my coach. I say if I do this, this, and I don’t remember well, but the position changed and I say ‘This is nice’. You can take a DDT but many DDTs, and not at the neck, it’s here [on the forehead]. I say ‘Okay, I like this.’ I remember the first time I did it in Mexico and many people say that looks weird, it’s no good. And I said ‘No, I like.’ Many people say ‘Don’t do that. It looks weird.’ I say ‘No, I like’ and I kept [doing it] for a long time and now it’s a big move.”

Regarding the name behind the move, Vaquer noted that it came from the mind of Matt Bloom, the head coach at the WWE Performance Center

“One time I train in the PC and I am the ring, and I say, ‘I don’t know. I think a lot, but I can’t [think of] a name.’ So I talk with Matt Bloom and say I don’t know a lot about English,” the former NXT Women’s Champion recalled. “I know I want to stay more close to American people, so how can I name this move but in English? In Spanish, in translation, sometime it makes no make sense. So I talked with Matt Bloom and he say ‘Yeah, Devil’s Kiss.’ [I said] ‘Yeah, good in English?’ and he’s like ‘Yeah, really good.’ Everybody said really good and said okay, that’s the name.”

Thanks to the vocal reactions of WWE NXT commentator Booker T, the Devil’s Kiss has gained immense popularity over the last year, with fans often mimicking Booker or counting along to the slams as Vaquer does them.
