Drew McIntyre has reacted to the one-year anniversary of his iconic match with former WWE World Champion CM Punk.
In 2024, McIntyre and Punk fought through an intense year-long rivalry. They faced each other three times first at SummerSlam, then in a Strap Match at Bash in Berlin, with both men earning one win each. Their feud ended inside Hell in a Cell at WWE Bad Blood.
The match, as advertised, featured several brutal spots. Ultimately, McIntyre lost the final showdown in brutal fashion, receiving 16 staples in his head during the bout. One of the most memorable moments came when he took a direct bump onto the steel steps, landing spine-first, which led to Punk capitalizing on the moment by hitting a GTS to secure the victory.
A year later, McIntyre looked back on his rivalry with the Straight Edge Superstar. He posted photos from their Hell in a Cell match on X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote, “Highest of highs. Lowest of lows. One year on.”
Drew McIntyre admits he won’t attempt scary bump again in WWE
In an interview with the Gorilla Position podcast, Drew McIntyre looked back on his Hell in a Cell match with CM Punk. He admitted he would never try the bump onto the steel steps again. He said, “I got lucky, convinced I could do it as safely as possible, and I did, but it’s not a risk I’ll ever take again. It’s the risk for that match, for that moment, and I knew in the moment like, considering, you know, the amount of blood that was going on and how it felt in there and the story we’re telling and the way things were coming off this is the match I’ve been looking for in my whole life.”
“As a kid, I used to always love those final blowoff matches. You know, the Triple H vs. Mick Foley kind of matches the final ones, just the bloodbaths, the war. And afterwards, like, my God, I’ll always remember this. And I do remember moments like that and was aware I’m having one of those right now, and for me personally, I’ll look back one day when it’s all over and go, “Wow, that was pretty cool.”
