Dustin Rhodes has begun sharing details about how he envisions the final chapter of his legendary wrestling career.
While the AEW veteran works towards an in-ring return following double knee replacement surgery, he already has a specific idea in mind for his eventual farewell match.
The 57-year-old recently discussed both his recovery and retirement plans during an appearance on Tony Schiavone’s What Happened When podcast.
Although Rhodes remains focused on returning to action, he revealed that one of his most recognizable trademarks may not be part of his final walk to the ring.
Dustin Rhodes wants final match to honor “The Natural”
When asked whether he had thought about his last match, Rhodes admitted that the details remain largely private.
“I have and I’m keeping it really close to the vest. I think Tony knows. I’ve said it to him a couple times and the other guy knows.”
While he declined to reveal his opponent or the full plan, he did provide insight into the presentation he hopes to use for the occasion.
“I kind of want to go out with no paint on this one and just like a throwback to The Natural.”
Rhodes explained that he would prefer to pay tribute to his early-1990s persona rather than the face-painted character fans have associated with him for decades.
“Dustin Rhodes in the early ’90s. Not in that gear though, in my body suit because let’s face it, I’m 57.”
Despite joking about his age, Rhodes noted that he is currently in excellent shape.
“Even though I am high school weight right now, which is impressive because I’ve worked my butt off.”
He added that he would still make some adjustments for the occasion. He said, “Just a little change, maybe some different colors. And you know, for the one last hurrah, I would like it to be a big moment.”
Rhodes recently stated that he hopes to wrestle for another year and a half to two years before retiring. After that, he is expected to remain with AEW in a full-time coaching and producer role through his long-term agreement with the company.
For now, the AEW star is still fighting his way back from injury. But when the final bell eventually rings, it appears he wants to leave the face paint behind and let “The Natural” take one last bow.
