AEW Collision Results:
This week’s episode of Collision kicks off with tag team action as FTR takes on Juice Robinson and Austin Gunn of The Bang Bang Gang.
FTR (w/ Big Stoke) vs. The Bang Bang Gang
- The finish of the match saw Big Stoke instigating people in masks at ringside and it turns out to be Bandido and Gravity who chase him off. Stoke is cut off by JetSpeed and Stoke eats a superkick from Bandido. Juice Robinson nails a distracted Dax Harwood with a reverse DDT to score the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: The Bang Bang Gang
Grade: A-
WOW! I didn’t see that one coming. I thought for sure this was a lock win for FTR. Seeing Juice Robinson and Austin Gunn pick up that win was very cool. I really like it when wrestling booking surprises me. This was a great way to kick off the show.
Protokada…?
We get a backstage interview, which took place following Dynamite on Wednesday night between Kyle Fletcher and Renee Paquette. Fletcher questions if he was too quick to accept the TNT Title match against Mark Briscoe because either way, Briscoe wins. Either he becomes a champion, or he gets to join the Don Callis Family.
Kazuchika Okada comes in and apologizes to Fletcher that Konosuke Takeshita isn’t there to support him, obviously trying to drive a wedge between them. Okada says after Full Gear both of them will still be champions, and they will be known as Protokada. Fletcher pondered the name as Okada walked away.
TNT Championship: Kyle Fletcher (c) vs. Ace Austin
- The finish of the match saw Kyle Fletcher hit Ace Austin with a top rope brainbuster to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: And still TNT Champion, Kyle Fletcher
Grade: A-
Really great match. This was probably the best showcase for Ace Austin since joining AEW. It should now be very clear why that man is part of the roster. The Bang Bang Gang is picking up some momentum, and it’s cool to see another act rising right now.
Kris Statlander is confident heading into AEW Full Gear
We see Kris Statlander on a staircase backstage. Statlander says Mercedes has a lot that she’ll never have, but there is one thing she has that she doesn’t: focus. Statlander says she is completely focused on being the AEW Women’s World Champion. Stat says if Mercedes thinks this title is another side piece, she would be wrong in the most extraordinary of ways.
Statlander says Mercedes was eliminated from the Tag Team Title Tournament because she wasn’t focused on her. Now she will follow Mercedes into Blood and Guts and will do whatever she has to do to make sure Mercedes is focused on her, and when they finally meet at Full Gear, all of Mercedes’ focus won’t make a difference.
The Death Riders want nothing to do with The Don Callis Family
We get a clip from the Death Riders following Dynamite, where Jon Moxley suggests they should just let their opponents have the advantage heading into Blood and Guts because they are already hurt and tired, declaring the match is in the bag.
Don Callis and Kyle Fletcher approach them, and Callis is hopeful that the Death Riders can injure Mark Briscoe in Blood and Guts next week before Full Gear. PAC says everyone knows they are done playing games and they are leaving five bodies in the cage. PAC says whatever they do with whatever is left of Mark Briscoe, they don’t care.
Callis says he would owe them if they took care of Briscoe. Moxley asks if they look like they need a favor from anyone. Callis says nothing as the Death Riders walk off one by one.
TayJay vs. Maya World and Hyan
- The finish of the match saw TayJay hit a double team maneuver on Hyan to score the pinfall victory.
Winners: TayJay
Grade: N/A
Just a quick squash match to showcase TayJay before their tournament match. Smartly booked, but definitely not worth grading.
Athena is not pleased
Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion Athena is backstage with Lexy Nair. Athena says she doesn’t feel like the forever ROH Women’s Champion because she was pinned by Harley Cameron. Athena says she’s sure Harley feels special, but she isn’t and blames Kris Statlander, Billie Starkz, and Mercedes Moné for her loss.
The Fallen Goddess says if Cameron survives Blood and Guts, she’ll realize she doesn’t need weapons and five people by her side to defeat her. Athena says she’s going to make Cameron a puppet for MIT.
Jamie Hayter vs. Skye Blue
- The finish of the match saw Jamie Hayter hit Skye Blue with Hayterade to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Jamie Hayter
After the match, several members of each team came out to ringside and brawled. The deciding match for the advantage between Harley Cameron and Thekla will happen next.
Grade: B+
Fun match. With the third match already being advertised, there was no way that Hayter was going to lose this one. AEW rarely will advertise a match and the not deliver on it.
Harley Cameron vs. Thekla
- The finish of the match saw Thekla hit Harley Cameron with a spear to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Thekla
Grade: B-
This match was incredibly stiff at points, but then at other points it looked like their shots were completely missing each other. I’m not sure what happened here. Overall, I thought the match was enjoyable, but there were several spots of the match that just took me out of the experience, if that makes sense.
I don’t believe this will be an omen to the women’s Blood and Guts match next week, as I fully expect that match to steal the show on Wednesday. With Thekla winning, I’m going to guess somehow Moxley loses somehow later tonight. It would be kinda lame for the heels to have the advantage in both matches. We’ll find out soon enough.
JetSpeed are looking for gold as solo acts
JetSpeed are backstage with Lexy Nair. Speedball and Kevin Knight make it clear they don’t want to watch Full Gear from the sidelines and throw their names in the hat for the Casino Gauntlet match for the new AEW National Championship. Speedball believes that with both of them in there, it will double their odds of winning. I mean, the math does check out, I suppose?
Tony Khan is forcing an Acclaimed reunion
Max Caster and Anthony Bowens are backstage with Lexy Nair. They both say they are done teaming, and The Acclaimed is never getting back together. Both men say they will be involved in the Tailgate Brawl at Full Gear.
Nair tells them that Tony Khan says the numbers don’t lie, and they do better together, and if they want to compete at the Tailgate Brawl, it will be as a team. Both men yell at TK and refuse to do it before each walks off in a different direction.
We get a video package for the AEW World Championship match between Hangman Page and Samoa Joe at Full Gear.
Jon Moxley (w/ Marina Shafir) vs. Roderick Strong
- This match saw plenty of interference from the Death Riders throughout. The finish of the match saw Darby Allin grab Jon Moxley’s ankle and keep him from getting back in the ring by the count of ten. Roderick Strong wins via countout.
Winner: Roderick Strong
Grade: B+
After the match, PAC tries to go under the ring, but Darby Allin hits him with a taser. The babyfaces stand tall as AEW Collision goes off the air.
AEW Collision Review:
This was a good episode of Collision tonight. While it very much helped set the stage for Blood and Guts this Wednesday, I did very little in terms of build for Full Gear later this month. I feel like AEW does a better job balancing things on Dynamite than they do on Collision.
While I enjoy Collision most weeks, and tonight’s episode was no exception, it’s often a show that I could miss and not feel like I missed out on any major storyline advancement of AEW programming. While tonight’s Blood and Guts setup would go against that, the rest of the show just kinda felt like a solid night of wrestling. And while there is nothing wrong with that, I would just like my Saturday night wrestling shows to feel more “must-see.”
Grade: B+
