Thanks to an unlikely assist, Drew McIntyre is the WWE Champion once again after winning the Three Stages of Hell match on SmackDown.
Tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown aired live on Netflix internationally from Germany ahead of tonight’s broadcast on the USA Network. In the main event of the evening, Drew McIntyre defeated Cody Rhodes in a Three Stages of Hell match to become WWE Champion for a third time. But it wasn’t without controversy.
In the closing moments of the steel cage match, McIntyre attempted to escape the cage. However, a hooded figure stopped him. The hooded figure revealed himself to be Jacob Fatu. It was implied that McIntyre was the one who took him out several months ago on SmackDown. The same night the two men were set to compete in a number one contender’s match.
Fatu got in the ring and was taking it to McIntyre, but when Rhodes got involved, the Samoan Werewolf attacked him as well. While Fatu was distracted with Rhodes, McIntyre used this as an opportunity to escape the cage and win the match.
Rhodes attacked Fatu after the match out of frustration as McIntyre watched on from the aisle as SmackDown went off the air.
