John Cena seems to have a strong heart.
With its mix of character-driven and plot-driven storylines, pro wrestling has kept many fans invested for years. In some cases, the investment has evoked emotions like sadness. For others, such as former WWE Champion John Cena, the same cannot be said.
While appearing on No-Contest Wrestling, Cena specifically addressed whether wrestling has ever broken his heart. Admittedly, it hasn’t.
“I guess this is a reflection of who I am. It never has,” Cena said. “Never has, not once. As a kid, even like when Andre ripped Hogan’s chain off, it never broke my heart. I was just more interested. I’ve never had a moment. And I guess that’s why I’m literally like almost blindly optimistic. Of course, I’m WWE proud, but I love wrestling…I just tried to spread the energy that I felt. It has never broken my heart, ever. I’ve never been in a position as a fan or as a performer that I was frustrated with the business.
“I had a conversation with a good friend of mine not too long ago of like, I’ve never had that [feeling of] they’re f***ing against me, they’re booking me bad, or I can’t get this,” he continued. “I’ve never had that chip on my shoulder. I’ve just always moved through space with gratitude. Even when they were going to fire me, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I get that. I hear it.’ ‘You want to rap on TV?’ Yes, I do. ‘Would you want to do this?’ Yes, I will. ‘Would you want to throw a dummy around for a commercial?’ Sure will. It’ll be great. ‘You want to do this crazy podcast?’ Yeah, that’s a great idea. I’ve had time to think about it. I guess I’m the one fan it never has.”
While wrestling has never caused Cena’s heart to shatter, it has warmly touched it. As an example, Cena cited Shawn Michael’s emotional utterance of “I’m sorry, I love you” to Ric Flair at WWE WrestleMania 24 as a moment that particularly moved him. Michaels, of course, then went on to deliver a Sweet Chin Music to Flair and end his WWE in-ring career.
