CM Punk hates a particular played-out wrestling trope the most.
For years, WWE has used a familiar formula in big rivalries. Two enemies are forced to team up. They argue. Something goes wrong. Then they face each other in a singles match later. Punk clearly feels it is played out.
CM Punk Explains Why The Trope Doesn’t Work
Before Elimination Chamber in his hometown of Chicago, the WWE World Heavyweight Champion said there is one wrestling storyline he would love to get rid of- the overused “can they coexist?” angle.
Speaking on The Morning Mosh Pit ahead of the Elimination Chamber, Punk didn’t hold back. He joked that he has no interest in teaming up with Roman Reigns to add layers to their feud. In his words, the answer to “can they coexist?” is “No.”
“How about the ‘can the guys that are wrestling form a tag team and get along?’ On the road to, say, WrestleMania. I’m not trying to tag with Roman over the next eight weeks. ‘Can they coexist?’ Man, shut up. The answer is no, and I’ll see you in Las Vegas,” Punk said.
Punk could set up a showdown with Reigns at WrestleMania 42 as long as he successfully defends his title against Finn Bálor at Elimination Chamber.
He believes his rivalry with Reigns doesn’t need a disingenuous show of teamwork to make it interesting. The tension is already there.
Punk also mentioned another predictable habit, which is how WWE often puts one Elimination Chamber match at the start of the show and the other at the end. He feels that kind of card structure can get stale, too.
“Here’s another trope. We start the show with an Elimination Chamber. We end the show with an Elimination Chamber. Let’s get rid of that, too,” Punk stated.
Punk joked that if he had any backstage influence left, he would not use it to demand the main event. He said he would rather go first. He even suggested that either his match with Bálor or the match between his wife, AJ Lee, and Becky Lynch would be great opening matches.
