Shelton Benjamin addresses an old story from his WWE days.
At the time of his first WWE Championship win (December 2009), Sheamus was several years into his professional wrestling career. Still, according to him, that didn’t stop a locker roommate from repeatedly calling him a “rookie.”
During a May 2015 interview with Talk Is Jericho, Sheamus claimed that former WWE Intercontinental Champion Shelton Benjamin referred to him as that on a number of occasions, much to the Irishman’s growing annoyance. “I’ve got no problem with Shelton, he’s an amazing athlete. But every time we were sitting down he was calling me rookie,’ Sheamus said. “I don’t know what it was. I’d never been anything but nice to him and I just wanted to make the feud good. It really annoyed me, but I was going to stay professional about it. At TLC after I beat John Cena [for the WWE Title], I was sitting there with the championship and I thought to myself, ‘Who’s the bleedin’ rookie now, mate?'” (H/T Wrestling Inc)
Benjamin himself has seen Sheamus’ story float across social media since then, but according to him, it is false. “Never happened, I’ve heard the story, but never happened,” Benjamin wrote on X after the story resurfaced.
Currently, Sheamus is a near 20-year veteran under the WWE banner. Meanwhile, Benjamin resides in All Elite Wrestling as a part of The Hurt Syndicate alongside Bobby Lashley and MVP.
